On January 12th, 2010, an earthquake struck the western peninsula of the Republic of Haiti, claiming more than 250,000 lives and leaving 1.2 million people homeless. The earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 7.0, destroyed homes, schools, and hospitals and triggered landslides and soil liquefaction that damaged the port and coastal roads.
